Road Trip

There are some days in the calendar that feel less like plans and more like traditions carved in stone — and for me, the trip to the Farm & Deli Show in Birmingham sits right at the top.
This year felt extra special. Not only is it my favourite day out of the year (no exaggeration), but it was Holly’s first time experiencing it — and honestly, there’s nothing quite like seeing it through fresh eyes.

We hit the road early, fuelled by coffee and the kind of excitement that only comes from a day packed with great food, great people, and a little bit of friendly competition. The drive itself is part of the ritual — navigating our way past the boundary of Hoylandswaine always seems like a big adventure to a girl who goes nowhere.
For me, one of the best parts of the show is reconnecting with suppliers I’ve been working with for nearly 20 years. There’s something incredibly rewarding about those long-standing relationships — seeing how far we’ve all come, sharing stories, and celebrating the journey. At the same time, it’s just as exciting to discover new suppliers and hunt down fresh, innovative ranges that we can bring back and share. That mix of familiarity and discovery is what keeps it magic every single year.

For Holly, it was an introduction — aisles packed with incredible produce, passionate makers, and more samples than you could ever reasonably carry. Which brings us to the bet.
Every year, without fail, the game is on: who can walk away with the most samples? It’s part strategy, part stamina, and part pure cheek. Bags get heavier, decisions get harder, and by mid-afternoon it becomes less about winning and more about how much you can physically carry without admitting defeat.
(Spoiler: neither of us admited defeat.)
By the end of the day, we were loaded up, slightly exhausted, and already talking about next year. Holly’s first time definitely won’t be her last — once you’ve experienced it, you’re in.
Because it’s not just a trade show. It’s a day full of inspiration, connection, and a reminder of why we love what we do.
Same time next year — and yes, the bet is already on.
